In 2006 Blake Nelson published a young adult novel entitled Paranoid Park, that has been adapted into a film by director Gus Van Sant, which was released in 2007. Blake's story deals with a 16 year old skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard at a skate park. Both the novel and the film take place in Portland, Oregon, although Blake/Van Sant's Paranoid Park is a skate park located on Portland's East Side.

Kyle's best friend Matty (Bryan Greenberg) also needs a good score to get into the same college as his girlfriend, despite the fact he failed the mock exam. They realise that the father of another student, Francesca Curtis (Scarlett Johansson) owns the building where the exam papers are being kept. They end up joining forces with a stoner Roy (Leonardo Nam), Kyle's new love interest Anna Ross (Erika Christensen) and the school basketball captain Desmond Rhodes (Darius Miles) who needs a good score to get onto his college basketball team. Together they hatch a plot to steal the exam papers.
